It all started when Siri suddenly appeared… Intuit had a workshop called "A Date with Siri" in April of 2011. For whatever reason, I was invited. I'm not into iOS so I'm not sure why an invite was sent to me, nor was I the right person for this. However, people from all over the company from multiple locations were invited.
As I was in transit, I got a little jealous why something like Siri wasn't on Android. While I was flying up to the event in Mountain View, I thought to myself how hard would it be to build something. Therefore, I started researching on the flight immediately. I went to the event, and then came home and continued tinkering.
The creation of Speech Recognizer was an evolution. It started in unstructured time, and as I got more excited I started working on the weekends. Weekend after weekend, I finally created an interactive avatar that featured speech synthesis and recognition capabilities. The process to evaluate Speech Recognition components in avatars directly led to the birth of Speech Recognizer.
